Question 1: Familiarizing students with the text is one aspect of guided reading. The teacher in this video clip spends a great deal of time discussing the content of the text. Why is this activity important, and how does it impact the students’ understanding?

Taking time to discuss and make sure the students in the class understand the content of the reading passage, allows students to spend time listening and comprehending the passage, rather than spending time trying to understand what they reading is even about. Talking and discussing the reading will also explains the content in a way that students can understand. Some students have difficulty understanding what they read, by discussing the information first, the teacher is increasing the chance that all students will do well. It is never a good idea to assign an assignment to students if they do not understand the content or what they are suppose to do.
